Empowering Indigenous Voices: Façon Magazine & Greater Bank’s Storytellers Scholarship Returns for a Third Year

In its third year, the Indigenous Storytellers Scholarship, a collaboration between Façon Magazine Australia and Greater Bank, continues to champion and nurture Indigenous creativity across New South Wales. This initiative is dedicated to supporting emerging Indigenous artists who convey their unique narratives through various creative mediums.

The scholarship offers a $10,000 grant to one outstanding recipient, enabling them to pursue their artistic ambitions. In 2025, for the first time, Greater Bank will also award $1,000 to each of the other eight finalists, recognising their exceptional talents and contributions. The program encompasses nine creative categories: writing, fashion design, accessory design, art painting, music, dance, digital art, film, and photography. Each finalist benefits from mentorship by industry leaders, providing invaluable guidance and support.

The scholarship is overseen by a committee of local business leaders, including Simone Jordan, an Awabakal Board Member and Indigenous Employment Partner at the University of Newcastle. Reflecting on her involvement, Simone stated, "It has been wonderful to support the Indigenous Storytellers Scholarship and witness the incredible talent of our storytellers. This initiative not only celebrates Indigenous voices but also fosters meaningful connections between culture, community, and the creative industry."

Lara Lupish, Façon Magazine’s Editor-in-Chief, emphasised the significance of storytelling in Indigenous culture, noting, "Storytelling is at the heart of Indigenous culture, carrying forward traditions, knowledge, and identity. This scholarship is our way of ensuring these voices are amplified and supported, inspiring a broader understanding and appreciation of Indigenous narratives."

James Cudmore, NGM Group Chief Customer and Digital Officer, highlighted the organization's commitment to nurturing First Nations talent: "We are very proud to support the Indigenous Storytellers Scholarship for a third year, and its elevation of First Nations creatives who are telling their stories in unique and impactful ways. This year we have increased our support with the addition of $1,000 for each of the finalists because we believe in the importance of recognizing and nurturing First Nations talent."

The scholarship is open to Indigenous applicants aged 18 and over, residing in New South Wales, who demonstrate a passion for storytelling through a creative medium. Applications for the 2025 program opened on February 4 and will close on May 1, with the successful recipient announced during a special NAIDOC Week event on July 10.

This ongoing collaboration between Façon Magazine and Greater Bank exemplifies a shared dedication to celebrating and sustaining Indigenous art and design, ensuring that the rich tapestry of Indigenous stories continues to thrive and inspire future generations.
